The why

Built on a long walk

Flex - Music Player started as a real problem. On long walks I build playlists that ramp up — steady openers first, then bigger and bigger tracks that pump me up and push me to go harder.

Keeping a long playlist in exactly that order meant fighting every music app I tried. Moving one song was a chore; shaping a few hundred was hopeless. I wanted real control over my own playlists, and nothing out there gave it to me.

So I built it, and now you can use it too.

Features

Twelve things you can do

From reordering a playlist to listening offline. All the screenshots are from the app as it is today.

Reorder playlists with a drag

Hold the handle next to a song and drag it where you want it. The new order is saved to your Plex server, so your other devices see it too.

Find any song in a playlist

Type a few letters to find songs, artists or albums inside the playlist. Use the arrows to go from one match to the next, or jump to the top or bottom. If the playlist is playing, it opens at the current song.

Flex - Music Player in-playlist search filtering tracks as you type

Search inside the playlist, not just your library.

Swipe a song into place

Moving one song through a long playlist can mean a lot of dragging. Instead, swipe it to send it straight to the top, middle, bottom or a random spot. You can choose what each swipe does in Settings.

Flex - Music Player swipe actions revealing move-to-position options on a track

Swipe left or right to move a song.

Press and hold a song

Press and hold any song to add it to another playlist or remove it from this one. Every row has star ratings, so you can rate songs as you scroll.

Tap a star to rate a song.

Add a whole album at once

Press and hold an album to add all of it to one of your playlists, or start a new playlist with it.

Flex - Music Player add-to-playlist sheet for an album with a new playlist option

Pick a playlist or make a new one.

Copy a playlist, then change it

Clone a playlist and edit the copy. The original stays exactly as it was, so it's an easy way to make a shorter version for a trip or try a different order.

Clone it, then edit the copy.

No deleting by accident

To delete a playlist, you type a 4-digit code that the app shows you. Only the playlist is removed. The songs stay on your server.

Type the code to confirm.

Play by mood

The Vibe tab lists the moods tagged in your Plex library, each with its own colour. Pick one and those songs play in shuffled order. If your library doesn't have mood tags, you'll see Playlists there instead.

Flex - Music Player Vibe screen with colourful mood cards

Pick a mood and press play.

A good-looking player

Big artwork, with colours taken from the album cover. Swipe left or right to skip songs, and tap a star to rate what's playing. You can also turn on a waveform progress bar in Settings.

Swipe to skip. Tap a star to rate.

Lyrics that follow the song

Lyrics scroll along with the song and highlight the line you're hearing. Tap any line to jump to that part of the song. Full-screen lyrics keep your screen on, and there are four text sizes. If your server doesn't have lyrics for a song, the app looks them up on LRCLIB.

Flex - Music Player full-screen synced lyrics over album artwork, with the current line highlighted

Tap a line to jump to it.

Watch the music move

Choose from six visualizers under the player controls: Simple, Bars, Scope, Blob, Dots and Embers. Swipe across them to change style, or turn them off.

Listen offline

Press and hold a playlist to download it for a flight, a commute or anywhere with poor signal. Turn on Keep favourites offline and the app downloads your most-played songs for you, over Wi-Fi if you like. Settings > Storage shows how much space is used and lets you set a limit.
